To all of our American friends and families, please get out there and VOTE! The world is watching you. And if you want to slow down the Trumpian politics of hatred and division, open racism and misogyny, greater economic inequality, global militarism and environmental degradation, then vote for the lesser of two evils – vote DEMOCRAT.
Do not misunderstand my advocacy of a vote for the Democrats as anything other than a political expediency at this historic moment in American politics. The alternative [to Democrats] is to endorse and undoubtedly speed up the processes by which America slides, with a quickening pace, into the darkness of a fascist regime. Make no mistake about this. A Democratic Party failure to win at least one House of the next Congress will be rightly interpreted by Trump & company as a vindication of their policies, albeit limited thus far, and the fear-based rhetoric that spews daily from the President’s mouth and twitter account. You think it cannot get any worse than the last two years. Think again!
The vast numbers of eligible voters who do not participate in the process by casting a ballot will equally have to live with the results from tomorrow’s election. Silence is not golden. Wishing for other alternative options on the ballot is not only forlorn, but under the current circumstances with all that is at stake, reckless and irresponsible. Don’t give in to all those old hackneyed cliches about ‘my vote doesn’t matter’, ‘I don’t know anything about politics’, ‘politics doesn’t affect me’, ‘they are all as bad as each other’, because it is just (ir)rational bullshit! Own your civic duty [to participate] and stand up for your democracy with all its freedoms and rights before you wake up, as if from a dream, and find yourself living in some American version of fascist hell.
To all those who intend to vote on Tuesday – do so, but more importantly, if you know someone who is reluctant or inclined not to vote, engage with them and offer to help them exercise their most precious of democratic rights – the right to vote! [before even more fellow citizens are deprived by fraudulent or more likely new illiberal means of this right].
